Research Biologist to chair the BDS

At its recent AGM held in Edinburgh, the British Deer Society elected Professor Rory Putman as its new Chairman. Professor Putman, who lives in Scotland, has worked for many years as a research biologist, specialising in studies on deer and their impact on their environment and as an independent consultant advising landowners, land managers and Government agencies on deer management. He has worked extensively in the UK and more widely across Europe.

Further bovine TB (bTB) measures have recently been announced by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs to help strengthen disease control and expand options to tackle new bTB outbreaks.

Camera collars to aid reindeer behaviour study in Cairngorms

A new study is to examine the behaviour of Britain's only free-roaming reindeer herd. Scientists are to investigate the ecological role the animals play in the Cairngorms, where the herd has been since 1952. Their work will also inform future sustainable reindeer tourism in the Cairngorms National Park.

GPS collars equipped with cameras will be fitted to some of the reindeer to track their movements.
