Changes to the clocks mean deer movement will coincide with peak commuting hours, increasing the likelihood of collisions.
Highways England, Country Land and Business Association (CLA) and The Deer Initiative Partnership have joined forces to warn motorists about the heightened risk of deer-vehicle collisions this autumn. They urge drivers to be more aware during this time of year and have issued some advice for motorists.

BDS will be holding its annual London Dinner, again generously sponsored by Knight Frank, in late November. You might not be there on the night, but you will still be able to take part by helping us raise funds for BDS research and education projects. We will have an online auction with sporting goods and lots starting a couple of weeks in advance and ending on the night itself. In addition there will be a brief live auction at the event with a handful of spectacular lots including driven grouse and accommodation in The Highlands, boar hunting in Germany, salmon fishing and an exceptional specially commissioned hand-built Emberleaf knife with a handle crafted from 40,000 year old woolly mammoth ivory and a patterned blade of the finest Damascus steel.

Next year’s AGM weekend will be over 11th/12th May 2019 and is being generously arranged and hosted by East Anglia Branch. Currently in the early planning stages, it will be based around Bury St Edmunds with visits anticipated to Euston estate and the ranges along with a barbeque, dinner, research updates and of course the AGM meeting itself. Further updates will appear in Deerbytes, Facebook and here on the BDS website once firmed up, with the full application form within the January edition of Deer.
BDS Chairman, Rory Putman, will be giving a lecture on 'Wild Deer and their Management In Britain: Burden or Benefit?' to the Natural History Society of Northumbria on 12th October at 7.00 pm.
The lecture is open to everyone, so BDS members are warmly welcomed but they are asked to make a donation (£3 minimum suggested). The event will be held in Lecture theatre 1.65 in the Ridley Building 2 within the Newcastle University campus [just off Claremont Road]. Seats are allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis. There is a car park just outside the lecture theatre but if that is full then there is a municipal car park on the other side of the road.
