THE GREAT BRITISH DEER SURVEY 2011
The British Deer Society is carrying out another National Deer Distribution Survey this year.
The Society undertook its last survey in 2005, publishing the results in 2007. It covered mainland UK and the resulting distribution maps from this survey can be found on the Deer Distribution 2007 page. The data collected, formed the basis for comparison with previous BDS surveys conducted in 1998 (Scotland) and 2000 (England, Wales and Northern Ireland) and an earlier survey carried out in 1968.
The 2011 survey aims to record deer all six species present or absent in every 10 km square of the UK, with the expectation of publishing the results in 2012.
The Society would like your help to do this, by using your knowledge of the area in which you live, or other areas that you may know well, to complete the attached forms detailing species of deer seen within these areas. You might also perhaps encounter a road traffic casualty during your travels or operate in different parts of the UK outside your area of residency, and your knowledge of deer under these circumstances will be of equal value to the survey.
Please assist by collecting data as soon as possible. The more that we get in the early stages of the survey, the easier that it will be to target gaps in the later stages towards the end of the year. Help us to complete this major piece of research work that the Society will be proud of.
