The British Deer Society - Photographic Competitions
The photographs you can view here on this site are taken from past Open and Members competitions by raw beginners, experienced amateurs, semi professionals as well as full time professional photographers on a variety of equipment from simple compact cameras to the latest digital SLRs with very long and very fast telephoto lenses. Regardless of the equipment they use, the one thing they all have in common is their love and appreciation of nature, their interest in and concern for deer and their enthusiasm for competition. After all, the equipment used doesn't matter. It's the finished picture that counts when judging takes place.
If you think that you can match - or better - the quality of some of the pictures on our web site then why not join the Society and enter the photo competitions and let us see your work.

RESULTS OF THE 2010/2011 BRITISH DEER SOCIETY PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION.
The competition was judged on the 4 February 2011 at the BDS offices in Fordingbridge. Judges were Trustee Director Ray Mears, Wildlife photographer and zoologist Tracey Rich and Mick Kelly the Manager of London Camera Exchange at Salisbury. There were a pleasing amount of entries from individuals and a number of Branches and the overall standard was very high, in some instances excellent.
After due consideration there was a clear winner in the Inter Branch competition, with Wessex Branch retaining the Dulverton Trophy for another year. The individual entries caused the judges a greater challenge however but, after much deliberation, they eventually narrowed it down to 3 finalists and a highly commended in the DSLR category.
RESULTS:
The Dulverton Trophy: Wessex Branch
Individual Competition:
1st place: Rob Moon - atmospheric shot of an Exmoor Red stag roaring.
2nd place: Philip Dean - a Red stag in a snow storm which embodied the wilderness of the highlands.
3rd place: Matt Moore - an intimate and close shot of a woodland Roe buck scenting with lip curled back.
Highly Commended: Jochen Langbein - a tender close portrait of a roe doe.

Compact camera category: Maitland Rankin from South West Scotland Branch with lovely shot of a Red stag standing on a sunny coll.

All the finalists not only shot outstanding images but also presented them very nicely printed on quality paper. The judges thoroughly enjoyed the whole process of viewing and selecting the winning photographs and are gratefully thanked for offering their services.
The next issue of 'Deer' will give more details about the winning entries and showcase the successful images.
There will be another competition next year and we already have sponsors and prizes. More details will be included in the 'Deer' article.
You've got to be in it to win it so don't hold back with those cameras and start snapping now. Good luck for the 2012 competition.
