BRITISH DEER SOCIETY
2nd OPEN INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION
Rob Donaldson-Webster (Chairman Photo Committee)
&
Jon Jayes (Secretary Photo Committee)
The British Deer Society Photographic Committee would like to announce the launch of the fantastic 2008 Open International Photographic Competition.
There are a number of big name sponsors supporting the event with some interesting and exciting prizes. Hotel breaks, binoculars, photographic products, city and deer park visits are all included and the overall winner could walk away with prizes worth around £2000.
For the BDS Deer Photographer of the Year, Border Fine Arts have generously donated a magnificent, limited edition, sculpture and Bushwear have offered a £10 credit against your next order to everyone who enters their special categories.
There are several categories to give everyone a chance of producing and submitting specific deer photographs. The competition will be challenging but within the grasp of everyone who enjoys nature photography and deer in particular.
The competition is open from 31st March until 30th September so there is plenty of time to get out there and take some superb deer photographs. Entry fees are proportionate to the number of pictures that you enter, up to a maximum of 18. Prints must accompany all digital images and the event is open only to digital images whether original files or scanned copies of transparencies or prints. Read the rules carefully and enter your best shots.
The judges - Damien Demolder, Editor of Amateur Photographer magazine and Neil McIntyre, Highland wildlife and landscape photographer and winner of the 2003 BDS open competition - will be looking for images that are exciting, informative, entertaining and superbly produced with image sharpness, excellent colour rendition and contrast and generally great deer pictures.
The rules and an entry form can be down loaded from this site.
Good luck to all who enter.
ADVICE TO COMPETITORS
Read the rules carefully. Only digital images will be accepted. These should be on CD or DVD. Prints of the submitted digital images must accompany the CD / DVD. These are for record purposes and initial judging so please make them of the best quality that you can. 5"x7" minimum size up to A4 on glossy, good quality photo paper will produce the best images.
Major digital manipulation is not allowed although factors such as un-sharp mask, minor adjustment of colour, contrast and brightness may be made but must be stated on the rear of the prints.
Label clearly all prints and CD /DVD's with your name and address and e-mail / telephone.
The competition subject is deer and they must be alive. Photographs can be taken anywhere in the world either in the wild or in deer parks, wildlife sanctuary or zoo or any captive situation. If they are taken in captive conditions try to eliminate - at the taking stage - any background distractions of fences or man made objects unless specifically relevant to the produced image concept.
Produce pictures that are sharp, well composed and framed, have good contrast and/or colour rendition. Pictures of animals doing something or which are informative, entertaining, educational and generally well produced will stand a better chance than shots of animals statically posed in front of the camera. 'Atmosphere' in a picture will add to its potential.
The judges will be looking for all the above qualities from photographers who have shown a competence in photography, have an eye for an excellent picture and who also have an understanding and appreciation of deer.
Please ensure that you include the correct entry fee for the number of images submitted. Category 1 is the general category and category 2, ('Bushwear' category) is subject specific.
